Email EPCR has decided to bring a misconduct complaint against the Munster Rugby Team Doctor, Dr Jamie Kearns, following the row that erupted midway through the second-half of Munster’s 15-6 loss to Saracens earlier this month. A 30-man scuffle erupted after an altercation between Munster’s head of medical Dr Jamie Kearns and Saracens hooker Jamie George.
Responding to the England and Lions star kicking a ball off Munster hooker Niall Scannell and into members of the staff, Dr Kearns is understood to have called George a «fat p****». George responded angrily, sparking a pile-up on the sideline involving both teams. Referee Pascal Gauzere spoke with captains Owen Farrell and CJ Stander, before awarding a penalty to the visiting side. After the game, Dr Kearns apologised to George and to Saracens director of rugby Mark McCall, who said the club would consider lodging a complaint about the «pretty horrible» remark. EPCR launched an investigation and yesterday concluded that the Munster doctor had a case to answer.
«Following an investigation, EPCR has decided to bring a misconduct complaint against the Munster Rugby Team Doctor, Dr Jamie Kearns, arising from the Heineken Champions Cup fixture between Saracens and Munster on Saturday, 14 December 2019,» they said in a statement.
«During the second half of the Round 4 match at Allianz Park, it is alleged that Dr Kearns directed an abusive comment, or comments, at the Saracens player, Jamie George, and that the comment, or comments, may have had the potential to bring the sport of rugby union, the Heineken Champions Cup, and/or EPCR into disrepute.
«In making the alleged comment, or comments, Dr Kearns breached the Disciplinary Rules of the 2019/20 EPCR Participation Agreement.
«An independent Disciplinary Committee to hear the misconduct complaint will be convened, and a date for the hearing will be announced as soon as practicable.
«EPCR will not be commenting on this matter in the meantime.»
EPCR has also decided to bring a misconduct complaint against the Sale Sharks Director of Rugby, Steve Diamond. It is alleged that during his post-match media duties, Steve Diamond made comments that may have been insulting to, or disparaging of, or critical of match officials. In making the alleged comments, Steve Diamond breached the Media Rules and the Disciplinary Rules of the 2019/20 EPCR Participation Agreement. After the defeat to Exeter, Diamond told reporters afterwards of a conversation he had with the officials.
«I just said ‘good game’, I just said ‘you had a fantastic game and your touch judge has had a brilliant game,'» he said, before adding a controversial aside.
«Hopefully that’ll go through to their assessors and we’ll never see the b***ards again in Manchester. Joke! I just get this feeling these days that people want a little bit more character in the [media] room, not just yes-and-no questions. We’re only having a bit of fun. «The decisions weren’t correct in a couple of those areas. One at the drive, a hundred per cent, I’ve seen it. Two at the scrum, we had dominance and we didn’t get the just rewards.»
As with the Munster case, an independent Disciplinary Committee to hear the misconduct complaint will be convened, and a date for the hearing will be announced as soon as practicable.
