‘A very important day’ — Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says thumping win at Leicester was a big step in title push

Twitter Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admitted his side’s thumping 4-0 win at Leicester was ‘a very important day’ in his side’s push to end the club’s 30-year wait for a Premier League title. A dominant Liverpool display highlighted a huge gulf in class between the sides currently sitting first and second in the table, with Liverpool’s latest win moving them a massive 13-point clear at the top after an incredible unbeaten start to the season.

After winning the FIFA Club World Cup in Qatar last weekend, Liverpool shrugged off any suggestion of fatigue as goals from Roberto Firmino (2), James Milner and Trent Alexander-Arnold secured a comfortable win for the red-hot title favourites.

Liverpool have won 17 of their first 18 Premier League matches, with Klopp admitting the consistency of his players has become one of their greatest attributes.

«I am happy about that,» he said, referring to his side’s ability to maintain their remarkably high standards.

«I appreciate it because I do not take it for granted and the boys have to do it every three days. We had big chances at the start of the game, did not score with them but stayed in the game and controlled it.

«It is was difficult for Leicester to get into the game, both teams felt the intensity of the season but we controlled it more and maybe Leicester were not as aggressive, maybe because of us and our positioning. We scored a first goal and it was a super, super, cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Roberto Firmino can score from that situation.

«We struggled a bit with their build-up in the second half and we won the balls immediately and then scored the second goal, then the boys were flying.

It looked really nice.

«1-0 is not even a result, it was a moment and it could have been difficult when they had set-piece but that is OK, I don’t expect a game like this to have a free run because they have so much quality and the season Leicester have had. We were very concentrated and the goals were absolutely nice and a very important day for us.»

Milner insisted the title race was not becoming a one-horse contest despite Liverpool’s dominant position, as he insisted his team-mates were focused on the challenges ahead.

«It’s one of many successful nights so far this season. We are not even halfway. So much can change and happen. The strength of this team is we take it one game at a time,» he stated.

«I think it was important to start well, we knew they would be fired up. In the first half we weren’t as clinical as we could have been but it was a great performance and to get the number of goals was pleasing. A good, solid performance.»

Massive statement tonight !fantastic display, total domination of the 2nd placed team!Could have been 8-0.This team is right up there with the best LFC have ever had.Need to win the league and their names are in lights
