Manorhamilton: Many tributes paid to Franciscan Sisters

The American order of nuns, the Franciscan Sisters of the Atonement, who have had their only convent in Ireland in Rossinver since the 1930s, were honoured by the people of the parishes of Ballaghameehan and Kiltyclogher on Friday night last with the celebration of a Mass of Thanksgiving in St. Aidans Church, Ballaghameehan and later at function in Kiltyclogher Comm The American order of nuns, the Franciscan Sisters of the Atonement, who have had their only convent in Ireland in Rossinver since the 1930’s, were honoured by the people of the parishes of Ballaghameehan and Kiltyclogher on Friday night last with the celebration of a Mass of Thanksgiving in St.

Aidan’s Church, Ballaghameehan and later at function in Kiltyclogher Community Centre. The Bishop of Kilmore, Dr. Leo O’Reilly was present on this special occasion, as were a number of Franciscan Friars from Rossnowlagh, many priests from the north Leitrim area and nuns representing a number of other orders. Large crowds attended the Mass in St. Aidan’s Church and the function in Kiltyclogher Community Centre. Una Bredin delivered a very interesting lecture on the history of the Franciscan Sisters of the Atonement, covering the order’s work in America, Rossinver and in other parts of the world. The lecture that Una delivered was based on research that Rossinver women, Grace McGuinness had carried out in recent times on the Franciscan Sisters and indeed Grace was the author of the lecture. When the Franciscans decided to set up a convent in Rossinver in the ‘30’s, the Bishop of Kilmore at that time, Dr. Finnegan gave permission for the order to locate in his diocese as was required by canon law. When the new convent was under construction in Rossinver some stones from the ancient local Franciscan Abbey of St. Mogue were included in the walls of the building.

The nuns moved into their new convent in Rossinver on May 15, 1935 and it was blessed in a special opening ceremony on August 8, 1936 by the Papal Nuncio and Dr.

Finnegan. During the years that followed thirty-nine Leitrim nuns joined in Rossinver, with ten coming from the local area itself, while twenty-eight sisters from a number other counties in Ireland also enlisted in Rossinver. The fall in vocations from the 1960’s onwards saw the role of the Rossinver convent change and the building is at present on the market, as the Franciscan Sisters have moved into rented accommodation in Manorhamilton. The link with Rossinver will come to an end in the not too distant future when the nuns will return to their American home at the Mother Lurana Convent in Graymoor, Garrison, New York. On Friday night Edmund Connolly, a Rossinver native who remembered when the nuns first came to the Parish around seventy year ago, paid a warm tribute to the Franciscan Sisters who ministered in Rossinver. Edmund who has had a life long association with the nuns said “it’s sad for everyone to see the Sisters leave the convent in Rossinver”. Reflecting on the nuns who came to Rossinver Edmund explained, “They entered and made contributions both here and abroad”. We thank God for having the Sisters among us for close to seventy years and in returning to Graymoor they are returning home”. A number of presentations were made to Sister Ita on behalf of the people of Ballaghameehan and Kiltyclogher. An emotional Sister Ita thanked everyone for their generosity and she invited everyone to visit the nuns in their new rented home at 2 Clooneen Park, Manorhamilton.
